Top Ten Tuesday // Characters whose job I’d enjoy

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s theme is:

March 2: Characters Whose Job I Wish I Had

This week’s topic is such a good one and I had fun thinking up jobs I’d enjoy doing, even if I was rubbish at them.

A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow
Orion owns a teashop and I think I’d enjoy doing the same thing. Serving customers tea and snacks all day would be good fun, and I had a part-time job as a barista while I was at university, so I know I wouldn’t be bad at it.

The House in the Cerulean Sea
I definitely wouldn’t want Linus’s job, but Arthur’s would be quite fun. Being a teacher and caretaker for magical children, one of whom may or may not be the Antichrist? Sure, why not.

The Prince and the Dressmaker

This is a job that I think I’d be terrible at until I practiced, but I think being a dressmaker would be a lot of fun. Especially if I got to make some of the beautiful dresses that Frances does.

Harley in the Sky

Here’s another job I’d probably be rubbish at but that sounds amazing – an aerialist. Doing acrobatics and routines in the air would be amazing (as long as there was a net underneath).

The Downstairs Girl

I really like writing so Jo’s job as a newspaper advice columnist sounds like something I’d love to try. Although giving people life advice is a big responsibility, so I’d definitely want some training first.

Criminal Intentions
The main characters in this series, Malcolm and Seong-Jae, are both detectives and I hope that Kate in an alternative universe is doing that as a job. But although I like the idea of this job, I imagine the reality wouldn’t be as adventurous. I’d love to solve crimes, but I don’t think I’d enjoy seeing dead bodies.

Strange the Dreamer
Lazlo is a LIBRARIAN. I don’t think I really need to say any more than that.

A Darker Shade of Magic
Being a magician for the crown would be right up my street. Being able to use magic and help people? Sign me up. If Kell ever wants a holiday, I’m available to fill in.

Invictus
The main characters in this story are time travellers. TIME. TRAVELLERS. I would LOVE to do that for a job.

Gearbreakers
Although this book isn’t out yet (it releases on 29th June) I already think Eris’s job sounds intriguing. She specializes in taking down Windups from the inside so she’s basically a mecha anti-mechanic, as well as a rebel. I’d like to have the skills to assemble things or dismantle them with your hands, so I don’t know if I want her job or if I want to be her best friend.

What do you do for your job now and which characters’ jobs would you like to try?

  1. Pfft, you don’t need training to be a newspaper advice columnist! None of them have training! You could just dive right in with your only qualification being strong opinions, and if you got questions you didn’t know how to answer, you could just not answer them. I assume that’s what all advice columnists are doing anyway. 😛

  2. I must say, while I’d love to try my hand at being a detective, I am way too squeamish to actually do a good job of it haha. Now, I am fortunate enough to share in Lazlo’s job, and it is so much fun and varied, but being a time traveller would make the history nerd in me so happy and keep my wanderlust at bay haha.
