Creating a TBR jar for 2020

I often see people creating TBR jars and think it’s a brilliant way of getting through your backlist. So for 2020, I’ve decided to create my very own TBR jar.

Except. I didn’t have a jar.

So I used a mug instead.

(Yes, it is one of my V. E. Schwab mugs.)

The first thing I did was go through my shelves and write down all the physical books that are on my backlist. These include books like Nevernight, Circe, The Bone Season, Pachinko and many, many more.

Then I added in a few that are on my Goodreads shelves but I don’t own copies. If I pick one of these books out, I’ll either borrow it from the library, see if it’s available on Scribd, or buy a copy.

Once I’d written down 30+ books (more than enough to last the year), I folded them up so that I wouldn’t be able to peek.

Then I placed them all in the mug and mashed (yes, that is the technical term) them around so that they were randomly mixed up.

Then I picked out my first backlist book (for February), which was Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour.

This was nothing short of brilliant because I’m doing F/F February so this fits with that challenge as well.

From now until the end of the year, I’ll be picking one book out of my TBR jar each month (maybe more if I’m feeling daring/I have time) and will be slowly but surely getting through my backlist.

Do you have a TBR jar (mug)? How do you get through your backlist?

Until next time,KateNEW

  1. I kinda do but I’ve been so behind with my reading and reviews recently that I haven’t used it for a while. Rather than it being individual books, I’ve put locations: kindle, shelf, library, borrowed from friends etc with the idea I’ve still got a choice of what I fancy. Trouble is I need to actually do it… hope you have fun with yours!

  2. Hallo, Hallo Kate,

You’ve just solved something I’ve been attempting to sort out myself! I never have a jar on hand to put this project together and therefore I have been avoiding this kind of a challenge. I do like how I could add-in my backlogue reviews to a mug and rename it the TBR Cuppa or something other – I’m going to start working on this as it solves something about how I am truly indecisive when it comes to knowing what to read next and when! When I post about what I did I will definitely tag you and link to your post!

    Bless you for this!

And, I have no idea why I overthought this to the point where I didn’t think to use a mug!?
